How to restore wordpress site with updraft wordpress plugin

Have you experienced any trouble with your wordpress site which could not be undone anymore? Have you accidentally deleted some files of your wordpress site from your cpanel which made it inaccessible online? Or have you done something wrong with your website’s code which made broke when viewed online? If these things happen to you, what you need to do is to restore wordpress site of yours using your backup.

So, in this article, I will show you how to restore wordpress site using a backup from google drive. And the plugin we are going to use in here is updraftplus wordpress backup plugin which can be downloaded from wordpress repository.

Actually, this article is the second part of the previous article I posted before entitled “How to Backup WordPress Site Using Updraftplus WordPress Plugin”. You better read that article as well for you to fully understand all the steps done in this article.

This article has two parts. The first part is that, I will show you how to restore wordpress site directly from the wordpress admin panel itself using the backup files we save in google drive. So, to understand this, you need to read my previous article so that you will learn how to backup wordpress site to google drive.

The second part is that, I will show you how to restore wordpress site on a freshly installed wordpress cms platform, but again using the same backup files we have from google drive.

Part I – How To Restore WordPress Site Directly From Wordpress Admin Panel.

So, now let’s get started with the first one: How to restore wordpress site directly from the wordpress admin panel using updraftplus wordpress backup plugin.

Steps To Restore WordPress Site Using Backup

Here below are the steps to follow:

In your wordpress admin dashboard, go to settings and click on updraftplus backup plugin.

In the updraftplus interface, you are going to scroll down a little bit, under existing backups, you’ll see in the center the backup data/files I saved to my google drive account during my previous article.

You will see the four files I saved before which are the database, plugins, themes, uploads and others. These are the files that were sent to my google drive.

On the left side you will see the backup date. This is the date when the backup was processed.

And on the right size you will see under actions the buttons for restore, delete and view log files.

Restore button

By clicking this button, you will be able to restore the backup. So what files inside these backups will replace your existing one if you click this button.

Delete button

By clicking on delete button, you will be able to delete these backup files you have in your updraftplus interface. By clicking this, you will also be able to delete the remote backup files from google drive or from whatever online storage platforms you have.

View logs

The view log button is where you will be able to see all the details regarding the backup processes that was done before. You will also see in the view logs the files that were backed up. View log files will also show you if the backup process were successful or not. If not, then you will see there, the details of the error encountered during the processing of the backups.

If you are going to restore your site from its previous state you need to click on the restore button. This is the main focus of this article “To Restore WordPress Site”. So, go ahead and click on restore button and what this plugin will do is that it will retrieve the wordpress backup files from google drive and have them all reinstalled and overwrite your existing wordpress site.

Part II- How To Restore WordPress Site On Freshly Installed Wordpress CMS

Now, let’s move on the second part – restoring wordpress site on a newly installed wordpress cms.

This part is very important if in case your website encounters errors that cannot be resolved or undone anymore. Like for example, you accidentally delete the database associated with your website. Or let’s say, your wordpress site is hacked and the hackers did something on your website which makes in unable to function and run online.

There are so many instances where you need delete your wordpress site and install a fresh wordpess cms on its root directory so that, there you can start restoring your backups.

So right now, I am going to restore my wordpress site on a newly installed wordpress cms platform by overwriting it with the back up files of my wordpress site from google drive.

In the example below, a freshly installed wordpress site is already running. There is no guide in this article telling you about how to install a fresh wordpress cms on yor server. But I will also update this article in the future on how to do that.

Steps to Follow To Restore WordPress Site On Freshly Installed WordPress CMS

So, here below are the steps to follow in restoring the wordpress site:

Head over to plugins menu and click on add new. Search for updraftplus wordpress backup plugin.

Click to install and then activate it. Then go to settings and click on updraftplus backups.

You are now in the updraftplus plugin dashboard. For you to restore the backup files of your wordpress site that are stored in google drive remote storage, you need to integrate again your google drive to this newly installed wordpress cms. To do this, just go updraftplus settings by clicking on it.

Under the section that says “Choose Your Remote Storage” click on google drive to select it.

Then head over to the bottom part where you an find the button to save your changes.

Click on save changes and you will be prompted with dialog box telling you to “follow the link to authorize access to your google drive account. Click on it.

On the google drive login page choose and account to where your wordpress backup files.

 Another prompt will tell you that updraftplus wants to access your google account. So, click allow.

 After clicking allow, you will be prompted to updraftplus page to complete your setup. Just click on complete setup.

After clicking on complete setup, you will be routed back to your wordpress admin, specifically in the updraft plus admin panel.

What you need to do next is to click on rescan remote storage link that is found under Existing backups section.

After it’s done scanning for existing files on your remote drive, it will show you the backup files you have. Look at my example below. Those are the things which will show up after it’s done scanning for files in your google drive.

The final step is for you to just click on the restore button. If you have saved many backups to google drive, you will see more than one lines of backup data available there. So, you need to click on the restore button for the files with corresponding date which you need to restore.

Once you click restore, you will be prompted with another dialog box, telling you what to restore to your site from backup drive. Like in the image below. What you need to do is just mark check all the five boxes there which stands for PLUGINS, THEMES, UPLOADS, OTHERS AND DATABASE. Then click on restore button located below.

After clicking restore button, you will see on the same dialog box that the plugin will begin processing the downloads of your backups from remote drive to your local server. Once it’s done, you will see a prompt on the same dialog box above with a message telling you to click on restore again.

Just click the restore button again the second time and then updraftplus plugin will begin restoring your worpdress site to its original state. The newly installed wordpress site you have will be overwritten with files from your backup since the plugin will install all these files to your currently installed wordpress platform.

I think that’s everything you need to know about how to restore wordpress site using backups from google drive.

Please remember though that your wordpress admin login credentials will be same as the previous ones you have with your backup. This means the username and password of your freshly installed wordpress site, if set on new ones, will no longer work, but the old ones from the backup will.

If you have been doing this process many times and have become familiar with restoring your site using your backup files from remote drive, you won’t have been felt worried or scared if in case you encounter unpredictable errors or did accidental deletion of your website’s file from your server, because you already know what to do.
